Johnson C. Smith Gains Momentum After Day One At CIAA Men's Tennis Championships

April 24, 2003

Charlotte, NC - After the first day of competition came to a close at the 2003 CIAA Tennis Championship, the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls seemed to be gaining momentum as they won two of the final three championship doubles matches to finish the day with the overall scoring lead with 23 points.

Heading into day two, the Golden Bulls will look to continue their dominance, but will be followed closely by Shaw University who tallied 20 points on the first day, and North Carolina Central University and Virginia State who are knotted in a tie for third place with 17 points each.

At first doubles, the Golden Bulls' pairing of Chris Lee and Michael White defeated Shaw University's Michael Oladele and John Agori by the score of 8-6. JCSU was able to capture the victory in second doubles as well as Justin Gilbert and Larry Holmes defeated North Carolina Central's pairing of Headon and Wilson, 8-1. To close out the afternoon, JCSU would be edged by Shaw University as the Bears' David Imonite and Samuel Okoye defeated the Golden Bulls' Rahman and Hunter 8-3.

Johnson C. Smith and Shaw, separated by only three points, both look to be gaining momentum heading into Friday's singles competition, with North Carolina Central and Virginia State looking to mount a challenge themselves.

Day two action will again take place at Hornet's Nest Park, weather permitting, starting at 9:00 am. Should weather pose a problem, the singles competition will be moved indoors to the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Club's indoor tennis facility.
