CIAA Rescinds Women’s Player of the Year HonorsFebruary 21, 2002Hampton, VA .. Documents sent to Shaw University and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association show that Naomi Mobley, a senior basketball player for SU, violated her amateurism status by participating in and accepting expenses at a training camp hosted by the Houston Comets of the WNBA in the Spring of 2002; therefore deeming her ineligible. Shaw University will forfeit all wins in which Mobley participated. “It is disappointing that this breech of the rules was discovered at the end of the season, however the CIAA can not condone violations,” says Leon G. Kerry, Commissioner. The second highest vote-receiver, Allyson Hardy of Bowie State University, is the newly named Player of the Year. Winston Salem State University’s Lashonda Horton has been added to the 2003 All-CIAA Team. Final standings released on Sunday will reflect Shaw University women’s basketball forfeits.
