William Hayes Appointed New Athletics Director at NCCUMay 28, 2003
DURHAM, N.C. -- North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Chancellor James H. Ammons announced today that William Hayes, former head football coach at North Carolina A&T State University (A&T), has been appointed the new athletics director at NCCU. His three-year contract, that includes an annual salary of $110,000, will begin July 1, 2003. "I think he is the right man for the job," said NCCU Chancellor James H. Ammons. "He was a strong candidate with a winning attitude. I believe that he has the ability to develop a top notch athletic program for his alma mater." Hayes was hired by A&T in 1988 after spending 11 years as the head coach at Winston-Salem State University. During his career, Hayes accumulated a 195-105-2 career record, establishing himself as the winningest coach at both Winston-Salem and A&T. He won two CIAA titles as WSSU head coach and led the Aggies to three MEAC titles. He is a member of the executive board of the Southern Region Boy Scouts of America, chairman of the NCAA Public Relations Committee and president of the CIAA Football Coaches Association. Hayes earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from NCCU in 1965 and later earned a master's degree in physical education from A&T.
