NCCU's Phil Spence Signs Contract Extension

DURHAM, NC -- North Carolina Central University men's basketball head coach Phil Spence has signed a one-year contract extension offered to him by Chancellor James H. Ammons. "I am appreciative to have the opportunity to continue to do the things that I love to do; and those are teaching and coaching young men," said Spence. "I am thankful to the Chancellor for trusting me with the basketball program. I feel that we took flight in '03, and hopefully we'll soar in '04."

In his third season at NCCU, Spence was selected as the 2003 CIAA Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to the CIAA Western Division title and an overall record of 16-13, improving from a 9-18 mark in 2001-02.

"Our team continues to improve under Coach Spence's leadership," said Chancellor Ammons. "Hopefully we will bring home the CIAA Championship in 2004."
