Steve Wilson Grabs Reins as BSU Defensive CoordinatorApril 8, 2003BOWIE, MD---The Bowie State University Bulldogs had the No. 2 defense in all of Division II football in 2002. Steve Wilson, who knows a thing or two about football and defense, takes over the challenge of keeping the defense as one of the nation's best for the 2003 season and beyond. After spending 10 years in the NFL, Wilson coached the Howard University Bison for 13 years. During that time he won two Black National Championships and his teams led Div. I-AA in several defensive categories. After spending one year away from the collegiate ranks, Wilson agreed to become the defensive coordinator for head coach Henry Frazier, III's squad. "It's an honor to have the opportunity to come here because I see this program as one that is skyrocketing," said Wilson. "I've had a lot of questions about why I would take the job as a defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. When you have an opportunity that excites you, you do what you do. Number one, I'm a teacher and they teach...I've had some tremendous teachers and now it is my job to relay all that information and put it in the heads of the young people here at Bowie State University." The Bulldogs success in 2002 led to the defection of several of their assistant coaches, including: previous defensive coordinator John Morgan, who took the head job at Ft. Valley State University; offensive coordinator Otis Covington, who joined Morgan at Ft. Valley in the same capacity and offensive line coach Pat McGroarty, who returned to the high school ranks to take control of the Paul VI football program. "They have their programs to run and I wish them well," said Frazier. "In 2003, I will run the offense and Coach Wilson will run the defense. With essentially two head coaches concentrating on specific units, I think that gives us an edge that other teams in the conference won't have," he concluded.
