Raleigh Duo Takes CIAA All-Sports Award

May 29, 2003

Raleigh, NC… The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association presented Shaw University with the Loretta Taylor Women’s All-Sports Trophy and Saint Augustine’s College with the C.H. Williams Men’s All-Sports Trophy at the Annual Award’s Luncheon this afternoon.

Shaw University was awarded with this honor after finishing two points over Virginia State, who has won this recognition for four consecutive years. Shaw has captured three championships this year; Softball, Women’s Basketball and Women’s Cross Country.

Saint Augustine’s College has also dominated in championship titles this year with top finishes in Men’s Cross Country and Outdoor and Indoor Track and Field Championships. Their addition of football last season, which adds 50 points plus additional points earned for final placing, finally put Saint Augustine’s in position to reach the finish line first.

The Loretta Taylor All-Sports Women’s Trophy and the C.H. Williams Men’s All-Sports Trophy are determined by a point system established to award an institution for achievement in each of their women’s and men’s programs. The champion is the institution with the most combined total points for all sponsored sports based on their conference finish and the number of CIAA sponsored events.

Adrian Ferguson, an alumnus and Sports Information Director at Livingstone College was awarded the John Holley Sports Information Director Award. Ferguson’s ingenuity in computers and digital imagery has taken Livingstone to a new level of technological advancement. Ferguson’s video-clips of CIAA Athletic action can be found on the CIAA website as well as the Livingstone athletic site.

Congratulations are going to William Carver of Fayetteville State University and Addie Griffin of Elizabeth City State University for being named Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator of the Year. Both individuals have made concentrated efforts to maintain an equilibrium between the men’s and women’s programs.

This year’s Jeanette A. Lee Athletic Achievement Award went to Michael Bailey of Virginia Union University for being an extraordinary leader and instituting new programs for the Panthers’ Athletic Department.

All Conference Coaches of the Year announced throughout the year were formerly given their awards.
