2003 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team Announced

HAMPTON, VA -- Twenty student-athletes from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association have been named to the sixth annual CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Team.

“CIAA student-athletes possess a strong commitment to athletics and strive for higher achievements in academics,” said CIAA Commissioner Leon G. Kerry. “These students represent the strength of the CIAA and its dedication to creating ambassadors for the future.”
The 2003 CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Team recognizes 20 student-athletes, 10 on the First Team and 10 on the Second Team, as voted on by the CIAA-Sports Information Directors’ Association. The average grade point average of the First Team is a 3.834, and the average for the Second Team is a 3.648 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

The 2003 CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic First Team consists of Sharon Gorgani of Elizabeth City State; Andregus Holmes of Fayetteville State; Pheshetta Johnson and Rhonda Lee of North Carolina Central; Katrina Johnson and Santisha Martin of Saint Augustine’s; LaToya Martin of Shaw; Luqman Jaaber and Katherine Wade of Virginia Union; and Aaron Federspiel of Winston-Salem State (see attachment).

The 2003 CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Second Team includes Felicia Smith and Courtney Walls of Bowie State; Kim Bond of Elizabeth City State; Bryan Chapman and Roshawnnah Clark of Fayetteville State; Bryan James and Ebony Sumerlin of Johnson C. Smith; Kareem Nembhard of Livingstone; and Shennel Beckles and Sophia Minott-Lindsay of Saint Augustine’s.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed one full academic year at a CIAA institution, earned a minimum 3.20 overall grade point average, and played as a starter or important reserve in a CIAA sanctioned sport.
