29thAnnual CIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament

Lady Golden Bulls Trod On Golden Slipper

FEBRUARY 28, 2003, Raleigh, NC---The clock finally struck 12 for the Cinderella Lady Falcons of St. Augustine’s College.

After moving through the first two rounds of the 2003 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Tournament, the No. 6 seed from the West saw their run end as they fell to the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University, 71-49.

“We came here to win, we didn’t come to have any moral victories,” said a disappointed Lady Falcons head coach Antonio Davis. “We’re going to work at it and come back next year,” he concluded.

The Lady Golden Bulls advance to their second CIAA Championship game, a place they have not been since 1989. That year they lost to Shaw University, who they will face at 5 p.m. It will be the first trip to the finals for Lady Golden Bulls head coach Vanessa Taylor.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity and we’re very proud to represent our University,” said Taylor.

The Lady Golden Bulls (18-11) took control of the game in the first half, in which they forced the Lady Falcons to shoot just 19 percent from the field, and led 37-27 at the break.

Up 18-10 with 10 minutes left in the first half, the Lady Golden Bulls closed out the half by outscoring the Lady Falcons 19-7. Lauren Goss, Adrine Pettaway and Joi Surratt each scored at least four points apiece during the run.

With the Lady Falcons (11-19) struggling from the field in the first half, the Lady Golden Bulls hit 17-of-42 shots and led the rebounding battle by a 32-19 margin.

The Lady Golden Bulls would finish the contest with a decisive 57-39 edge on the boards.
“I just went hard to the boards to get rebounds,” said Pettaway, who finished with a game-high 12.

The Lady Falcons could not focus in on one person to stop as the Lady Golden Bulls had their most balanced scoring effort of the tournament, led Goss, who led the team with 15 points. Pettaway had 12 points while Surratt and Terri Edwards chipped in with 10 points apiece. Annie DeRoy had nine points and six assists as well.

2003 CIAA Rookie of the Year Rhonda Brown had another strong performance for the Lady Falcons as she scored a game-high 16 points while Dana Atkins pulled down 13 rebounds.
