St. Augustine’s Upsets Winston-Salem

FEBRUARY 25, 2003, Raleigh, NC---The sixth seeded Lady Falcons of St. Augustine’s College upset number two seeded Winston-Salem State in a dogfight 61-54.

In the first half the two teams shot poorly from the field. The Lady Falcons were 7-of-25, while the Lady Rams were 10- of –31, 1-for-7 behind the three-point line. The teams were almost even in all other statistical categories. The score was tied six times and there was one lead change. St. Augustine’s had a 12-11 point lead at the 10:50 mark but the Lady Rams turned it up a notch to go to halftime with a 26-23 lead.

Shanika Wallace led the way for the Lady Falcons in the first half with eight points and was 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Rhonda Brown added five points and two assists in a sloppy first half in which both teams had more than 10 turnovers. Monique Kirkland led the Lady Rams with six points in the half and was the only player on either team to shoot 50 percent or better from the field before halftime.

In the second half the teams came out again going back and forth with no team ever really taking control. St. Augustine’s finally tied the game on a jumper by Ashandra Dewalt at the 9:05 mark in the second half, only to see the lead change three more times before they were able to take control for good. They finally took the lead for good on a lay-up by Rhonda Brown with 59 seconds remaining the half. Great free throw shooting down the stretch iced the game for the Lady Falcons as they went 5-for-6 from the line.

“ This time we were better prepared,” said Brown who led all scorers with 21 points. “Last time we had a mental lapse in our defense but tonight we stepped up to the challenge.”

Brown was joined in double figures by Dana Atkins who added 18 points for the Lady Falcons.
Monique Kirkland led the Lady Rams with 16 points and Janine Martin had 10.
