Lady Bears Continue to Roll
FEBRUARY 25, 2003, Raleigh, NC---The Shaw University Lady Bears
continued their probable run to the 2003 Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association Women’s Basketball title Tuesday night and ensured that
there would at least be a new champion.
The Lady Bears systematically deconstructed the defending CIAA champion
Lady Trojans of Virginia State University, 79-55, in a game that was never
really close.
The Lady Bears (5-24) were up by 10 at the break and used a 10-0 run to
start the second half, virtually sucking out all of the remaining suspense.
They will now face the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University in
the 1p.m. semi-final on Friday.
“The game unfolded like we thought,” said Lady Bears head
coach Jacques Curtis. “We knew they would be tough and play hard.
We struggled offensively because of injuries but we’re glad to make
it to the semi-final.”
Naomi Mobley continued to be the difference maker for the Lady Bears as
she scored a game-high 21 points. Her all-around statistics also included:
10 rebounds; three steals; three assists; four blocked shots and countless
others that she altered.
Mobley’s presence and the Lady Bears interior defense caused the
Lady Trojans (16-12) to shoot an anemic 28 percent (18-65) from the field,
including a 3-for-17 night from behind the arc.
The Lady Trojans did not hit their first field goal of the game until
the 10:09 mark on an Alonna Marable 3-pointer, at which point the Lady
Bears lead was 18-5.
The Lady Bears had built that advantage as seven different players scored.
For the game, Jessica Hawkins scored 10 points as did Margiella Mobley.
Margiella Mobley led the Lady Bears rebounding attack, in which they out-rebounded
the Lady Trojans, 53-35.
The Lady Trojans were led by Becky McKee, who scored 15 points. Marable
scored 13 points and Tiffany Thomas chipped in with 10 points.
