Lady Broncos beat Lady Tigers
FEBRUARY 25, 2003, Raleigh, NC---The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos
defeated the Lady Tigers of St. Paul’s College 73-53 in second round
action of the CIAA Tournament at the RBC Center.
The Lady Broncos (22-7) got out to a slow start as the Lady Tigers built
a seven-point lead 10-3 early in the first half. The Lady Broncos would
go on a seven point run to tie the score at 10-10 on a free throw by Tiffany
Mitchell at the 10:26 mark in the first half. After the tie the Lady Broncos
would go on to take a 10-point lead, 31-21 at the 1:08 mark of the half.
Even though the Lady Tigers (12-12) out rebounded the Lady Broncos 27-18
they made only 3-of-11 free throws, while Fayetteville State went 7-for-12.
The Lady Broncos led 33-23 at halftime.
The Lady Broncos came out in the second half and increased the lead to
38-27 at the 15:23 mark of the half. At the 7:00 mark the lead was stretched
to 57-40 on a free throw by Danielle Evans. From there the Lady Broncos
would cruise to the victory. St. Paul’s shot 26.2 percent from the
field, making only 4-of-31 three-pointers.
“We realized this was a team that could put up three’s by
the bushel,” said Fayetteville State head coach Eric Tucker. “Fortunately
we were able to defend them.”
The Lady Tigers controlled the glass outrebounding the Lady Broncos 58-
40.
“I was definitely concerned about that,” said Ticker. “But
the stat that really counts is that we won the game.”
Leading the way for the Lady Tigers was Xaviera Johnson with 16 points
and 12 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Quisannah Noel with
10.
Evans led the Broncos with 21 points and Brahsheedah Elohim added 11.
The Lady Broncos will play the winner of the Virginia State/Shaw game
on Friday at 11:00am.
