29thAnnual CIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Monday, February 24, 2003 Lady Tigers Go Downtown For WinFEBRUARY 24, 2003, Raleigh, NC---All year the St. Paul's College Lady Tigers have lived and died with the 3-pointer. In the opening round of the 2003 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Tournament, the Tigers lived by the 3-pointer and advanced to the second round with their 58-53 win over the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University. The Lady Tigers (12-11), who entered as the number four seed in the Eastern Division, will face the West's number one seed Fayetteville State University at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. The Lady Tigers were 7-of-31 from behind the arc and were able to hold off the Lady Eagles by sinking 6-of-10 free throw attempts in the game's final minute. "It took us a while to get going, but we shook off the nervous bug, and got it going, said head coach Anthony Portley." Quisannah Noel led the Lady Tigers with three treys in eight attempts, including a few from NBA range, and had a team-high 19 points. The Lady Eagles (9-17) trailed by 10 points with just over eight minutes to play when the Eagles went on a 14-5 run to close within 48-47 with three minutes to play. Tiona Beatty led the Lady Eagles with 25 points and scored 10 of those during the Lady Eagles' comeback. A layup by Quinn Lewis and free throws from Noel would stretch the lead back to five. The Lady Eagles would get as close as two points on free throws from Beatty with 24 seconds left, but they would not score again. Lewis was too powerful for the Lady Eagles to contain as she scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. "Our goal was to get al lot of rebounds," said Lewis. While they were out-rebounded 50-43, Tiffany Foster and Natasha Bailey kept things close. Foster scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Bailey had a game-high 13 rebounds. |
