Broncos Win Tournament Opener
FEBRUARY 26, 2003, Raleigh, NC---The Fayetteville State
University Broncos (11-16) opened up the 2003 CIAA Basketball Tournament
by defeating the Saint Paul’s Tigers (8-20) by a score of 61-52
Wednesday afternoon at the RBC Center in Raleigh, NC.
The Broncos started the game on a 19-4 run, 13 of which were scored by
senior forward Bryan Chapman. “I wanted to lead by example, and
show leadership,” said Chapman.
The Tigers offense sputtered early, shooting 33 percent (9-27) in the
first half. “The intensity wasn’t there and we got off to
a late start,” said Saint Paul’s head coach Jerry Seale.
SPC would respond to the Broncos’ run by going on a 9-0 run, cutting
the FSU lead to 21-15 with 6:36 remaining in the first half. Fayetteville
State increased their lead to 11, and led 33-21 at the half.
Chapman led all halftime scorers with 18. FSU won the battle of the boards,
out rebounding SPC 33-21 in the first half. Shawn Moss led the Tigers
with eight points and five rebounds.
In the second half, Saint Paul’s was led by the hot shooting of
forward Chauncey Hallums. Playing inspired basketball, the Tigers opened
the half on a 13-2 run, and a Hassan Robinson three pointer cut the lead
to 3 (46-43) with 8:40 left in the game. However it was as close as the
Tigers would get. With a minute and a half to go in the ball game, Gerald
Johnson converted a lay up, and increased FSU’s lead to 5 (55-50),
and essentially put the game out of reach.
“Even though the season didn’t go as planned, we wanted to
come into the tournament with our A game and step it up,” says Johnson.
Chapman scored a game-high 23 points, while grabbing eight boards and
dishing out five assists. All-CIAA player Kenny Haywood didn’t have
his best day on the court but still managed to score nine points, and
snatch nine rebounds.
Saint Paul’s had four players score in double figures, led by Hallums
with 14, Moss contributed with 10 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Fayetteville State will meet North Carolina Central University in second
round action Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
