Spring Sports Championships feature Inaugural Women's Tennis Competition

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Spring Sports Championships will take place next week, April 18- 20 on the campus of Virginia State University, and surrounding Counties.

CIAA Tennis Takes a Higher Flight
On Thursday morning, April 18, 2002, history will be made with the CIAA having its first Women's Tennis Championship. The top four women's teams from each division will advance to the eight-team flight format, with six single flights and three doubles flights. Doubles will begin at 9:00 am at Prince George High School and Virginia State University, followed by singles on Friday, and Consolations/Finals on Saturday, April 20. The men's competition will follow the same format at both sites.

CIAA Tennis accomplishments advance even higher, having been granted an automatic bid for the 2002 Men's and Women's Tennis champions. This marks the first time in CIAA history that the tennis conference winner automatically receives a post-season opportunity.

Softball
The Petersburg Complex will host the 2002 CIAA Softball Championship; the top four teams in each division will advance to the double-elimination tourney. At high noon on Thursday, April 18 all eight teams will take the field followed by the two losers bracket games at 2:30 pm. Competition resumes on Friday at 10:00 am with the two winner bracket games at 10:00 am, two loser bracket games at 12:30 pm, quarterfinals at 2:00 pm and 4:00pm. Championship Saturday begins at 10:00 am with semi-finals and followed by the championship game slated for 2:00 pm.

The 2002 CIAA Softball Champion will advance to the NCAA Regionals.

Track
Virginia State University will host the Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Field Events begin at 12 noon on Friday, April 19, 2002 and Race Trials at 2:00 pm. On Saturday, beginning at 11:00 am, field events start followed by Relay Finals at 1:00 pm.

CIAA Track is the most successful post-season sport in the conference, featuring CIAA Hall of Famer and Olympic Coach, Coach George Williams of the Saint Augustine's College. As Head Coach of both Men's and Women's Track , Williams holds nine NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Team Championships and 62 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field individual titles.

Golf
The Prince George Golf Course in Disputanta, VA will host the Golf Championship. Tee off time is 10:00 am on Thursday, April 18, finals following on Friday at the same time.

Baseball
The CIAA returns a week later to Petersburg for the 2002 Baseball Championships.

A change for the 2002 season is the Play-in to commence on Wednesday, April 24 at 3pm on the campus of Virginia State University, between the 5th and 4th conference ranked teams.

Championship competition begins on Thursday, April 25 at 10:00 am at VSU with the 1# seed versus the play-in winner and the #2 seed versus the #3 seed competing at the Petersburg Complex, loser bracket games 2 pm at VSU. The double elimination tourney continues on Friday, with semi-final at 10:00 am and 12:00 pm VSU. Championship game is 1:00 pm on Saturday.

In addition to collegiate competition the CIAA will sponsor a free Baseball Y.E.S/Clinic the morning of the Baseball Championship, April 27, between 8:00 am and 11 am on the Trojan campus. The CIAA Baseball Coaches Association will introduce and teach the fundamentals of baseball while providing instruction in the basic mechanics of the game, for ages 12 years old to 17, groups and leagues are welcome.
