Administrators Honored; VSU and NCCU Retain All-Sports TrophiesMay 30, 2002 Raleigh, NC…The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association recognized its Administrators of the Year and All-Sports Champions at its annual Awards Luncheon at the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley. Each administrator was recognized for their extraordinary accomplishments during the 2001-2002 academic year. Alfonza Carter of Shaw University swept both Athletic Director of the Year and the Jeanette A. Lee Athletic Achievement Awards. Carter led the Bears program to its first ever CIAA Men’s Basketball title and Elite Eight appearance, winning the 2002 Baseball Championship and producing the Division II Basketball Player of the Year, Ronald Murray. Bowie State University Sports Information Director Scott Rouch, was named the John Holley Sports Information Director of the Year. Rouch, a Bulldog veteran, helped to bring national attention to stellar athletes including Charles Alston who was recently inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and Atcheson Conway who was named Division II Football Freshman of the Year. For the fifth consecutive year, the Virginia State University Trojans scored above the rest for the C.H. Williams All-Sports Trophy, which recognizes the top all-around men’s program in the conference, outpointing North Carolina Central, 161-146. Johnson C. Smith University and Virginia Union University tied for third with 134 points. North Carolina Central University, in their third straight year, kept the Loretta Taylor All-Sports Trophy, which recognizes the top all-around women’s program. The Lady Eagles led the conference with 149 points, followed by Shaw University with 141. The Lady Trojans of Virginia State placed third, 139. The C.H. Williams All-Sports Trophy and Loretta Taylor All-Sports Trophy are determined by a point system for achievement based on championship place finished for each sponsored sport. 2002 Coaches of the Year and Scholar Athletes of the Year were also recognized.
