St. Augustine's Women Successfully Defend Track Title
Men Finish Second

May 26, 2002

By the slimmest of margins the St. Augustine's College has captured its third consecutive women's national championship in NCAA Division II Track and Field. The Lady Falcons edged North Dakota State, 54-53, to take the title at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, Saturday

It all came down to the final event of the day where St. Aug beat NDSU in the 4X400M relay to capture the championship. Earlier, the reigning CIAA Champions finished 1-6-7 in the 400m run after a DQ in the 4X100M relay where they had the second fastest qualifying time.

Libia Rodriguez won the 400M Dash and finished 3rd in the 200M to earn 16 points on the final day of competition.

St. Aug's men fell short by three points and could not defend their title. The Falcons finished second to Abilene Christian, 91-88.

Sprinter Lancford Davis won the 200M Dash. Anwar Moore won the 110M Hurdles race and Adrian Findley captures the 400M Hurdles title. The Falcons also won the 4X400 Relay title.

Their fate may have been decided two days earlier when the 4X100M relay team was disqualified in the preliminaries. St. Aug came into the meet with the ninth best time in the country this year.

North Carolina Central's Jason Smoots successfully defended his title in the 100M Dash and North Carolina Central picked up the men's 4X100M relay title.
