CIAA Selects First-Ever CIAA Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year

Hampton, VA … The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced its first recipients of the Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Award, Shawn Alexander and Katerina Glosova. This honor, in its inaugural year, highlights two student-athletes who have excelled immensely both athletically and academically.

Katerina Glosova
Shawn Alexander, a senior, Sport Management Major from Asheville, NC, is a starting guard for WSSU Basketball, leading the team to a 22-7 record this season, all while maintaining a 3.7gpa. Alexander, a First Team All-CIAA honoree, led the Rams in scoring at 18.1 ppg, ranking 8th in the league in FG%, .526, and 6th in 3-Pt% at .426. Shawn, who has recorded 11, 20-point games, was named to the 2002 District III Verizon Academic All-America Team, was a 2002 First Team Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar, as named by Black Issues in Higher Education, is a 2002 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team selection, and was a 2002 First Team All-South Atlantic Region selection.

As a senior NCCU Women's Track/Cross Country standout, Katerina Glosova has swept both national and regional awards for athletic and academic merit. Glosova, a 3.970 gpa Hospitality and Tourism major, was most recently named as the 2002 Southeast Regional Athlete of the Year. Katerina was the recipient of the 2001 NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association Women's South Atlantic Region Scholar-Athlete of the Year Ward. This 2002 Southeast Regional Indoor Track Female Athlete of the Year and 2002 CIAA Commissioner All-Academic team member is also a Division II Southeast Regional Championship winner.

Both Alexander and Glosova will represent the CIAA as nominees for the Division II Conference Commissioner's South Atlantic Region Scholar-Athlete of the Year and will be recognized at the 2002 CIAA Spring Awards Luncheon on May 30, at the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley.
