CIAA Athletes Take Four National Indoor Track Championships
NCCU grabs two individual titles; St. Aug's men and women finish second overall

March 11, 2002

CIAA athletes placed well in the 2002 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston Saturday.

North Carolina Central University's Jason Smoots and Katerina Glosova were joined by St. Augustine's Libia Rodriquez and the St. Aug men's 4X400M relay team as national champions.

St. Augustine's men's and women's teams finished second overall.

Twenty CIAA athletes and three relay teams earned All-America Honors in the event.

Smoots, hailing from Gadsden, Alabama, successfully defended his indoor national title by winning the men's 60-meter dash with a time of 6.66 seconds. The next closest competitor, Tom Green of South Dakota, crossed the line in 6.73.

Now a three-time national champion, Smoots has yet to finish behind a collegiate runner during the indoor season. He placed first in the second heat of Friday's preliminary round with a time of 6.72.

Glosova, a native of the Czech Republic who had failed to earn individual All-America honors in three prior trips to NCAA track events, ended her collegiate indoor career as a national champion by winning the women's 800m run with a time of 2:08.73.

Rodriguez won the 400M dash where four CIAA athletes finished in the top 8 positions.
