CIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Right Around the Corner

January 22, 2002

Newport News, VA -- The 2002 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held Thursday, February 7, at the Freeman Sports and Convocation Center at Christopher Newport University with events beginning at 4 p.m.

The Division II National Champions St. Augustine's Falcons and Lady Falcons are looking forward to taking the crown back to Raleigh. Will St. Augustine's College continue their winning streak or will they be dethroned? If they win, this year will make their eighth year in a row winning the indoor championships. Their competition, however, would love to see them return home empty-handed.

NCAA Division II Woman Athlete of 2001, Carlene Cummings, returns this year alongside teammates Maurice English who placed first in the long jump, and Lakeya Williams whose 8.10 finish in the 55 meter dash earned her first place. Jennifer Walker from Virginia State University is another face to watch this year in the 55 meter dash. Junior Jason Smoots of North Carolina Central University will look to repeat his first place finish in the 55-meter dash. Derrick Blount, All-American from Virginia State University, will return to compete in the long jump and 55 meter hurdles.

The year's participating schools are: St. Augustine's College, Livingstone College, Virginia Union University, North Carolina Central University, Shaw University, Virginia State University, Bowie State, Winston-Salem State, and St. Paul's College.

Area high school students are encouraged to attend. For more information please call (757) 865-0071.
