Fayetteville State Begins Football Season September 7May 21, 2002 The football season will officially get underway at Fayetteville State University September 7 when third-year mentor Kenny Phillips blows his whistle at the Broncos candidates as they prepare to face Saint Augustine's College in their season opener. The Broncos will face nine traditional conference foes in a ten-game schedule when they square off against the Falcons who will field a football team for the first time since 1965. The two have battled each other twenty-one times with Saint Augustine's holding a 16 - 5 edge. Fayetteville State will play five games on the road and five at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Athletic Complex. At home the Broncos will face Livingstone College September 28 in the 2nd Annual Blues Classic at 7:30 p.m. North Carlina Central University will try to derail the Broncos at High School Recognition Day October 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Virginia State University will help the Broncos celebrate Homecoming October 19 at 1:30 p.m. Senior Recognition Day will see Bowie State University pitted against FSU November 2 at 1:30 p.m. On September 14, the Broncos will travel Rocky Mount, North Carolina
to do battle with Elizabeth City State University Vikings in the 5th Annual
Down East Classic at 6:00 p.m. They will follow that with a game in Salisbury,
North Carolina against Catawba College in a non-conference contest at
1:30 p.m. The Rams of Winston-Salem State University will get a look at
