Ronald Murray Named the Daktronics Division II Player of the YearMarch 19, 2002Edinboro, PA - Shaw University's Ronald Murray has been named the 2001-02 Daktronics NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Player of the Year. Murray outdistanced Kentucky Wesleyan College's frontcourt duo of Ronald Evans and Tyrus Boswell. Voting was conducted among the Sports Information Directors on the Division II level.
The rest of the all-senior first team features Edinboro University's Kenny Tate, a first team All-American in 2001 and Niki Arinze of Henderson State University. Murray, a 6-4 guard, has helped Shaw reach th edivision II Elite Eight for the first time. The Bears own a 27-4 record after winning the South Atlantic Regional with a 69-68 win over Carson-Newman. Shaw will face West Georgia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 20. Murray is in his second season at Shaw after transferring from Meridian Community College, and in 54 career games, he has scored 1,252 career points. The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Assocation Player of the Year and the CIAA Tournament MVP, Murray ranks fourth in Division II in scoring at 23.9 ppg. and 13th in assists at 6.0 per game. He is shooting 49.3 percent from the floor, making 242 of 491 field goals, including 44 or 124 three-pointers. He has also gone to the line an incredible 275 times, makine 214 for 77.8 percent. He adds 6.4 rebounds per game, while leading shaw in assists (184) and tied for first in steals (60). In addition to leading the CIAA in scoring and assists, he stands 11th in rebounding and steals. Muray has scored in double figures in 39 straight games and 51 of 54 games at Shaw. He has scored 30-or-more points eight times, including 36 in the regional championship win over Carson-Newman and a season-high 38 markers against St. Paul's .
