BSU's Ginsberg Named to Academic All-District Team

May 14, 2002

BOWIE, MD----With her athletic career over, graduating senior Candice Ginsberg continued to be recognized for her academic achievements this week. First she was named to the 2002 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District II College Division Softball Second Team, then was named to the 2002 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team.

Members of the College Sports Information Directors of America by districts select the Verizon Academic All-District Teams. The District II College Division consists of all non-NCAA Division II colleges and universities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The 2002 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team consists of 20 student-athletes, 10 on the First Team and 10 on the Second Team, as voted on by the CIAA Sports Information Directors' Association. The average grade point average of the First Team is a 3.889, and the average for the Second Team is a 3.697 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

"Our student-athletes carry two torches, one represents academics and the other athletics," said CIAA Commissioner Leon G. Kerry. "Each one of these students has proven to balance the two, to become a true champion."

Ginsberg, a senior sociology major on the Lady Bulldogs' softball team, earned the honor by maintaining a 3.83 overall GPA while excelling as a pitcher on the field. Ginsberg was first honored for her academic and athletic accomplishments when she was named to the 2001 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Commissioner's All-Academic Team. In April of 2002, Ginsberg was recognized as the 2001-2002 Bowie State University Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

In her first three years with the Lady Bulldogs, Ginsberg posted a 32-17 win-loss record while recording 351 strikeouts. She was the 1999 CIAA Rookie of the Year and was named to the All-CIAA Team in both 2000 and 2001. In 2002, she finished with an 11-9 record with a young Bulldogs squad, and struck out 156 batters in 126.1 innings of work while being named to the 2002 All-CIAA Team.
