The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Men's Basketball Coaches
Association has selected Ronald Murray the 2002 CIAA Player of the Year.
A senior guard at Shaw University, Murray averages 24.2 points per game. "Flip"
as he is called by his teammates, is a native of Philadelphia, PA. Like the "Above
the Rim" movie character he got his nickname from, he was discovered in a Philly
outdoor court by second year Shaw coach Joel Hopkins. This season he has led the
conference in scoring every week of the season, except for the first week, when
the Bears were not on the radar screen.
The Bear wonder has scored more than 30 points five times, but he is no ball
hog. He also averages 5.7 assists per game, third in the CIAA. This is only his
second season at Shaw. The Merridian Community College transfer is being scouted
heavily by the National Basketball Association.
Murray will be recognized Tuesday night, February 26 at the annual Men's Basketball
Tip-off Banquet. Former Detroit Piston, Earl Lloyd will be the speaker.
