The 2002 CIAA Hall of Fame Class Announced

Hampton, VA…The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association is proud to announce its John B. McClendon, Jr. Hall of Fame Class of 2002. Members include Olympic Track and Field Coach and winner of 23 national championships, George Williams; Bob Wilson, of West Virginia State University, one of the first African-Americans to enter the NBA; Keenan Menefree Matangira, one of Winston-Salem State University's female power scorers, and Howard Jones, a Virginia Unionite who is a renown Coach, educator, and former CIAA MVP.

George Williams, an Olympic Coach, has lead student-athletes to earn national recognition in indoor/outdoor track and cross-country. Williams is the recipient of over 90 national Coach of the Year honors. The legendary Saint Augustine's Coach, was selected in 1999 to coach the USA in the World Championship, Seville, Spain. A true Ambassador of the spirit of the CIAA, Coach Williams "Pub" is a legend in his own time.

Bob Wilson, a former All-American athlete, is one of the CIAA's 50 greatest players. Wilson led the CIAA's West Virginia State to unmatched national recognition in 1948 with a record of 33-0, the only unbeaten team in the nation. A former Globetrotter, Wilson joined his Yellowjacket teammate Earl Lloyd as one of the first African-Americans to play in the NBA. The former Milwaukee Hawk is a five-time Hall of Famer.

Keenen Menefree Matangira, an All-American in the 1980's for Winston-State University, led the nation in scoring in 1986. In the same year, the Lady Ram scored an incredible 42 points versus rival Johnson C. Smith, before the three-pointer was in place.

Howard Jones, the highly renowned Coach, was the 1953 CIAA Basketball Tournament MVP. The two-time All-CIAA player led Virginia Union to two straight tournament appearances. As a Coach for his Alta Mater, he boasted a 14-4 record, earning Coach of the Year honors. He took his winning attitude to New York City's Boy's High School, while during his 10-year tenure he recorded 128 wins and only 9 losses. For his coaching contributions, Jones is a New York City Basketball Hall of Famer.

The John B. McClendon Hall of Fame breakfast will be held on Friday, March 1st at 10:00 am in the Marriott Crabtree Valley Hotel, Raleigh, North Carolina.
