June 20, 2001

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Philip Stitt, men's assistant head basketball coach, for the past three years, has been named Winston-Salem State University Interim Head Men's Basketball Coach.

"Coach Stitt brings a wealth of experience and maturity to our men's basketball program. He is clearly well respected by members of our men's basketball program and supporters of WSSU athletics," says Chancellor Harold L. Martin, Sr. "He offers continuity to a previously successful program that will hopefully lead to continued success in the 2001-2002 year under his leadership.

Stitt will step into the position Rick Duckett, former WSSU head basketball coach, vacated to accept a position as an assistant coach at the University of South Carolina, a NCAA Division I school.

Stitt, who was charged with recruiting efforts for the program, has been instrumental with bringing key recruits to the WSSU. During his time at WSSU he helped the Rams post a 74-18 overall record and brought back-to-back CIAA Championships to the University in 1999 & 2000. The men's program has received berths to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional Tournament for the past three years.

"We're grateful for the opportunity to continue the success of the program, as it has been the past three seasons," said Stitt. "We appreciate all of the support that the Chancellor and the university has given us and happy to know that people have that much faith in our program."
