June 7, 2001

(STAMFORD, CONN.) North Carolina Central University junior shortstop Lanelle Turner has been selected to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America Softball Second Team, College Division, as chosen by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

A native of Chester, Virginia, Turner has earned an overall grade point average of 3.744 with a major of Business Administration, while also being recognized as a University Scholar in 2001.

Turner, an All-CIAA Second Team member in each of the past three seasons as the team's starting shortstop, led this year's Lady Eagles with 48 hits, 49 runs scored and 74 infield assists. She posted a batting average of .457 with seven doubles, five triples and 29 runs batted in.

She turned in one of her best performances of the season in the semifinals of the CIAA Championships (April 27, 2001) against Fayetteville State by hitting 3-for-5 with a double, and four runs scored.

Turner is the lone representative (out of 33 All-America selections to the First, Second and Third Teams) from a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), and is the only student-athlete on the first or second team from a North Carolina institution.
