The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association recognized its Coaches of the Year and All-Sports Champions at its annual Awards Luncheon at the Marriott Crabtree Valley in Raleigh, NC. Fourteen coaches were recognized for their efforts during the 200-2001 season. Virginia State University and North Carolina Central University repeated as All-Sports Champion.
Dr. Catherine Wright of Johnson C. Smith University was named Athletic Director of the Year, as voted amongst her peers. Marion Crowe of Fayetteville State University received the John Holley Sports Information Director of the Year Award. Saint Augustine's College's George Williams was honored with the Jeanette A. Lee Athletic Achievement Award by Commissioner Leon G. Kerry for the outstanding performances by both his men's and women's programs which brought national attention to both the institution and the conference.
Virginia State University picked up its fourth consecutive C.H. Williams All-Sports Trophy recognizing the top all-around men's program in the conference outpointing North Carolina Central University, 176-147. Johnson C. Smith was third in the rankings with 138 points..
The Loretta Taylor All-Sports Trophy recognizing the top all-around women's program, went to North Carolina Central for the second consecutive year. The Lady Eagles edged Saint Augustine's 110-109, powered by second place performances in volleyball, indoor track & field and basketball, to reclaim the annual prize. Shaw finished third with 104 points.
